Romans 5:20 has often been used as a proof text to prove that the Law of God should not be kept by Christians, because after all, doesn't it say that the "Law increases our sin"? Shortly after God brought Israel out of slavery in Egypt with miracles and power, the Israelites find themselves in a wilderness without food or water. While it certainly was nice to be out of slavery, the road to the Promised Land wasn't as sparkly as many of the Israelites had envisioned. Instead of having faith that the God who had JUST saved them would also provide for their basic needs, they began to complain to Moses, with some even desiring to return to the melons and fish that Egypt had to offer - even if that meant returning to slavery.

While we often read this story and shake our heads at the Israelites, how often have we done the very same thing? Yeshua redeemed us from slavery to sin and death, spiritual Egypt, and yet how often do we look back to "Egypt" and crave the sins that once held us in bondage? It's impossible to go forward when we're looking backwards. God desires to bring you into the Promised Land, it's time to break every chain and walk in freedom. Egypts first plague was the turning of water into blood. A warning of the final Plague of Passover to come: the Death of the Firstborn.

Yeshua’s first miracle was the turning of water into wine (blood). A beckoning to His future crucifixion on the Passover.

But while Pharaoh's firstborn would die in vain. God’s firstborn would die for the sins of Israel who had His blood on their doorposts.

And with this all: Yeshua has the face of both Mercy and Judgment. Mercy to those with His redemptive blood on their doorposts. Judgment to those who will face Him at the ever-approaching Second Coming.

We can win every theological debate and seem religious, but can we win souls?

When we first became believers, most of us were excited to spend time with God and tell everyone we knew about the new life we now have in Jesus. Our chains are gone, we've been set free! Yet as the years have gone by, many of us have become more enamored with knowing "about" God without also continuing to get to KNOW God. While we are to "study ourselves approved" (2 Tim 2:15), some of us have exchanged intimacy with God for head-knowledge, and our relationship with the Father has suffered.

We can win every theological debate, but can we win souls? The only way to walk out the Great Commission, to win the hearts of others for God's Kingdom, is by first surrendering our hearts to the Father. Will you return to your First Love?
