Rebecca & Isaac: The Fragile Miracle that shouldn't have happened
Eliezer was sent to find a wife for Isaac, but finding Rebecca would be an impossible mission.

Transcript
The story of Isaac and Rebekah's meeting is unlike any other. Abraham, Isaac's father, commissions Eliezer the servant to go out and find a wife for Isaac in a faraway land, among Abraham's own people, and not from the Canaanites. But what unravels is a story of miracles, signs from heaven, and this hope in God's ability and will to bring these two people together. But it comes with trial and difficult decisions. Have you ever wondered if God cares even about that which we consider mundane? And in your trial, if there is light in your darkness, or how to know where to turn when it all seems dark and uncertain? In this teaching, we're going to answer how Eliezer could possibly be expected to find the wife of another, how God gives signs from heaven and when to trust them. And what if we are yielded to God, but people around us aren't? Can this ruin God's plan for us? And lastly, prophetically, how Rebekah is still waiting for Isaac today, we jump right in. In Genesis 24:10, where Eliezer is now tasked to go and find a wife for Isaac, it's written then the servant took 10 of his master's camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. I think we need to take a moment and grapple with the impossible task that Abram has given Eliezer. It's one thing, and difficult enough to pick a wife for oneself. It's another thing to. To pick a wife for someone else. And it's one thing to choose a wife out of a particular people, but it's another to choose someone of strong moral character and someone who is compatible with my master. And so, understandably, Eliezer is a little nervous about accomplishing this task successfully. And he recognizes that there is no hope but for him to trust in God. And we read, he says a prayer to God, saying, behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Let the young woman to whom I shall say, please let down your jar that I may drink. And who shall say, drink and. And I will water your camels. Let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant, Isaac. By this I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master. And before he had finished speaking, behold Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her water jar of on her shoulder. Then the servant ran to meet her and said, please give me a little water to drink from your jar. And she said, drink, my lord. And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink. And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also until they have finished drinking. So she quickly emptied her jar into the throe and ran again to the well to draw more water. And she drew water for all of his camels. Now, there are some things in what we just read that is often overlooked, and one of the first things is Rebecca's dedication to this task that reveals her character. Eliezer comes to Rebekah and asks for a little water. But Rebekah doesn't just give him a little water. She gives a lot of water to his camels. See, when a camel is thirsty, it can drink about 40 gallons of water. Now, if you have 10 camels, as Eliezer had, that's 400 gallons of water on average that these camels will be drinking. This is over an hour of work that Rebekah is doing for a stranger in need that she had just met. Of course, she knew what she was signing up for. And as she went along with this act of great hospitality, it's written that Eliezer gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not. Now, at this point, you may think, well, Eliezer, what else do you need? Why do you need another sign? You came to God. You said, God, show me the woman who I asked for a drink, who offers to water my camels. Let that be this sign that this is the wife for my master Isaac. And now it's happened, and now Eliezer's gazing at her, wondering if this is the one. But I want to submit to you that Eliezer is acting in great wisdom. See, it's one thing to get what we think as a sign from God, and it's another to then go ahead and confirm that it is from God. For this task, to find a wife is of the most utmost importance. I cannot get this wrong. This is going to be the woman that my master will marry. And marriage is lifelong. It's right. And so he tests to make sure that he is hearing God's voice correctly. And so the next test that Eliezer applies is to see whether this woman is to be of Abraham's own kinsman. Because remember, Abraham said, this has to be a wife from my own extended family. And so we see in verse 23, Eliezer comes and asks her, please tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night? And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. Eliezer is extremely excited to hear this. He bows his head and he worships unto God. And he says, blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness towards my master. And as for me, the Lord has led me in the way to the house of my master's kinsmen. This is an incredible miracle. I mean, not only did he stand before the well, ask for a sign, and God makes that sign come to fruition as she waters his camels, but this woman who is doing this is literally of Abraham's extended family, the very people that he was looking for. The miraculous nature is recognized, and he praises God, for he had now received confirmation. Upon confirmation, And I want you to see this first, that it is okay for us to ask for confirmation when we think God is talking to us through a sign from heaven, a dream, vision, or any such miraculous event, Especially when the weight of our decisions are heavy. God is not afraid, nor would he despise us for asking for assurity in his will. But we see then also through God showing up in this way for Eliezer and for Abraham's family, that God wants to be intricately involved in every aspect of our lives, if we let him. You know, I've heard people say before, ah, God, he doesn't hand pick marriages. He doesn't handpick people coming together. You kind of go, oh, you pick who you want to marry. You know, God's kind of letting you do what you want to do. And, yeah, God can let you do what you want to do if you want to do it without him. But as we see in this story, that when we involve him from the beginning, when we say, like Abraham did, God sent an angel before us and prepare the way so that Isaac, my son, can find the wife that you have for him. What happens next in this story is we see that Eliezer pours out gifts upon Rebekah, A gold ring and bracelets on her arms. And then he travels with her to her family's house and brings them the news of what had happened. We read in Genesis 24:50, then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, the thing has come from the Lord. We cannot speak to you bad or good. For Rebekah's family, this is a strange situation. They've heard of the miraculous nature of God's involvement in bringing Eliezer, Abraham's servant, with this message that Rebekah is the wife of for Isaac. And this is a bittersweet recognition. So while the Lord's will is good, it also means that Rebekah must leave. And so naturally her family asks a question. It says her brother and her mother said, let the young woman remain with us for a little while more, at least 10 days. And after that she may go. But Eliezer said to them, do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way, send me away that I may go to my master. They said, let us call the young woman and ask her. And they called Rebekah and said to her, will you go with this man? And Rebekah answered, I will go. So Rebekah was faced with this. Do I stay 10 more days with my family or do I depart with the 10 camels? And Eliezer is adamant that now is the time, that it is now or never for her to make her decision. Now, this may sound quite strange, but there is a very prophetic message in this whole story that I want to start revealing to you. Eliezer represents prophetically the Holy Spirit of God coming to the bride of Christ. He's seeking her, and when he finds her, he tests her fruit. He sees whether she would water the camels. She displays good fruit. And then the Holy Spirit showers her with gifts of the Holy Spirit, and he calls her to leave her old life behind and follow him towards a new life, ending with the face to face with the bridegroom. And this is also what Yeshua, what Jesus himself spoke about, speaking to those who have this decision that Rebecca had. Do I go or do I stay a bit more in my old life? Yeshua said in Luke 9:61. And another also said, lord, I will follow thee, but let me first go bid them farewell which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, no man having put his hand to the plough and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. The 10 more days that Rebekah could stay with her family represents her old life. And the 10 camels that she would travel with towards her new life represents the new life with the bridegroom, a life of watering and riding upon ten camels, the ten commandments of God, a life that is a life of holiness and righteous living, a life guided by the Holy Spirit to be face to face with the bridegroom when the Holy Spirit calls us. This is the day that the Lord has made, and it is the day to make the decision. But I also want you to see the many moving parts in this story that we just read. I mean, think about it. For God's will to be accomplished, not only does Abraham need to trust that God will decide to involve himself in finding a bride for his son, but Eliezer needs to find a woman whom he has not seen and does not know who it is. Rebecca's parents need to release her to go with Eliezer and leave their house to a husband that they've not seen. And Rebecca needs to decide that she's willing to depart with Eliezer and have faith that Isaac is going to be a good match for her, sight unseen. And then finally, Isaac needs to receive her himself. See, the world says seeing is believing. The world walks by sight. But God reveals through this story the gospel of not seeing yet believing. See, Yeshua said in John 20:29, Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed. But blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed. Rebekah have not seen her bridegroom, and yet she believed. Sometimes we as people can feel like we're walking in the dark, that there's a situation and we're not sure what to do. And we are feeling for the hand of our king in the midst of trial and uncertainty. And even when it feels dark, truly there is great light, and our actions are guided indeed as we yield to him. That's what Rebekah did. That's what Isaac and Eliezer and Abraham and Rebecca's family did. But you may say, how does this all work out unto the Lord's will? It sounds awfully dangerous. The angel of the Lord prepares the way for the will of the Lord. We see that when Abraham came in the beginning to Eliezer with this idea, he said in Genesis 24:7, that the Lord will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son. From there, see whether it's Abraham, Eliezer, Rebecca's family, Rebecca or Isaac. They were all prepared for this day of intervention, and they didn't even know it. We learned that God works among those who are faithful to him, as it's written in Psalm 91:11, for he will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. And we learn when something needs to get done, the Lord gets it done. His voice and his plans overwhelms whatever circumstances, no matter how difficult. The question is, do you trust God? But you may say, well, pd, I trust God, but I don't Trust people. And if one of these people in this story acted differently, does this not mean that the story would change and that things wouldn't work out the way we read it today? I mean, it's a fair question. What if Abraham didn't trust God? What if Eliezer didn't pray? What if Rebekah didn't water the 10 camels? What if Rebekah's parents didn't release her? And what if Rebekah was too scared to go even if she was released? And what if Isaac didn't receive her as his wife? In fact, hearing it this way makes it clear that all of these situations are quite abnormal. It opposes human logic and it opposes our desire to control things. I mean, we would prefer to know easily. This is the wife. All the parents know one another. No one needs to send the daughter off and no one needs to, sight unseen, run into this. And yet they allowed it because God's power worked in them all and they yielded to Him. See, life is a dance between us and God for God's will to be done. He transforms and empowers us. He brings things together miraculously and he slays our giants. But we must yield. And if we rather yield to human logic and our need to control everything and have everything go easy when God has actually revealed his word way, why then do we ask why the Lord's will is not done in our life? If we want the Lord's will to be done in our life, we must let his will be done in our life and recognize that sometimes his will is not the easy path. Sometimes his will will suddenly come to our doorstep and ask us to leave everything, everything we have come to know behind, to go to a land far away, to start a new life with our God. Is that not the age old story of Abraham himself who needed to leave his land and go to a new land of promise? Is that not the story of his descendants, Israel, who needed to travel to a land of promise and leave Egypt behind? Is this then and not the story of Rebekah and your story? There is a cost to having the will of God done in your life and it costs you everything. Don't listen to those who say that it's free. It will cost you everything at times, but it's worth it. Because being in the middle of his will is the best place for your soul to be. It's the most joyous place, even when it's not the easiest journey. But the circle of influence around us does matter. It wasn't just Rebecca. It wasn't just Isaac, it was a whole group of people that made this story what it is. And the entire circle of Isaac and Rebekah is needed to yield their logic and their control to God's revealed plan. When God's people work together in this way, like a well oiled machine being oiled, being anointed by the Holy Spirit, that's how we can function in his will. That being said, I think it's important at this point to bring balance through a disclaimer. This story is one of exceptional circumstances and obviously not the norm. We must be careful in choosing a spouse. And Rebekah and Isaac's journey and how this developed is certainly not permission to throw out wise counsel and caution. When you think about marrying a spouse, we must investigate their character or like considering something like leaving your family to go to find your husband is something that should not be taken lightly, but with wise cautions. The only reason that many of the logics that we would put in was not followed in the ways that many of us would have considered as being very cautious was because of the exceptional circumstance that God miraculously revealed his plan. Remember the family themselves said in Genesis 24:50, the thing has come from the Lord and we cannot speak to you bad or good. They knew that God was in it, and God's presence in it brought peace to them, empowering them to yield to it. They were not being reckless with their daughter, but led by the Holy Spirit. So let us not be reckless in the name of being led by the Holy Spirit. We must be wise, we must be cautious when it comes to big life decisions. And at the same time, when God comes and reveals his will, we must be willing to take a leap of faith, which at times can feel scary. All right, now that that's out of the way, let's talk more about yielding to the Holy Spirit. People often ask, why don't I see God giving me signs or words of prophecy through others? Why don't I see healing or miracles in life? Why don't I see God's promises? The question is, do you and your circle, your spiritual family yield your logic and your control to the Holy Spirit, or do we hold on to those things with dear life? It's certain that the Lord has words that he desires to speak and healing he desires to give. But when the people do not trust, as Abraham trusted, when the people do not pray, as Eliezer prayed, when they're not releasing their will for God's will to be done, as Rebekah's family released her for God's plan, or when they do not walk in boldness, as Rebekah, who went to Isaac's house in boldness, did. If people don't yield, they will delay or not see God's deliverance. If we do not believe that he casts out demons, why would we be shocked if they rarely leave? If we do not believe that God can heal us, our marriages, our sons and our daughters, we will receive in accordance with what we believe. When I was in my youth, three different unrelated strangers came to me revealing a prophetic word regarding God's calling on my life. And all three of those strangers needed to trust and yield and walk up to me, a stranger, and give me that word. And if they didn't, if they were too fearful, if they didn't trust God in it and they didn't yield it to the Lord, then I wouldn't have received it from them. It is important for the body of Christ to walk in the relationship that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob wants. Now you may rightly ask at this point, is God's hand cut off from reaching me if other people don't yield to Him? The body of Christ functions best when they function together, each yielding to the Holy Spirit. And yet, if you yield alone while others neglect God's will, your surrender is enough. Let me say that again, your surrender is enough. If you indeed stand on God's will. Stand boldly and God will honour you and his will and ministry calling will be done in your life. While those who oppose his will are dishonored by the Father. See, Christ was dishonored by this world, opposed, betrayed by his own people and even by some of his closest spiritual family. And on his last day he stood alone. And despite this, his calling didn't depend on the will of others, but the will of God. And the Father's will was going to be accomplished in his life no matter what. And the Father's will was accomplished and Yeshua was honored by the Father. Do not underestimate how the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob can work with people whether they are submitted to him or not. Even Judas, the great betrayer of the Christ, the enemy of God, was worked into the plan of the crucifixion that would bring life to the world. God's hand is not cut off even by his own enemies. And his hand is not cut off even by yours. So what does this mean for our role as God's servants? I want to submit to you that there are still Rebecca's out there, seated in her parents House, not knowing of the calling that awaits her, waiting to be called to rise and depart from her old life. There are Rebeccas out there, young and old. Who needs to hear that? The Lord is calling her to something greater, a new life with Christ. And the Spirit of Eliezer is here today. The Holy Spirit that led Eliezer to Rebekah, that same Holy Spirit now lives inside of believers. And God is sending you, dear Eliezer, to call Rebekah into her calling. I mean, just think about it. Such a simple message. Eliezer had come. My master has a life for you, Rebekah, in a land that you have not seen. And this message was enough to let Rebekah leave everything and go. And that message is the simple gospel of the bridegroom. Yeshua spoke to his servants, his disciples. He told them, leave all you have and follow me. And the disciples abandoned their old lives to follow him into a new one. And in turn they were commissioned as his servants to tell the world so Rebecca may find her husband, so the bride of Christ may find her bridegroom. What was in the beginning will be again. And when Rebekah meets Isaac, it brings forth a great spiritual offspring, as it did for the more people that meet the bridegroom Yeshua, the more people meet Yeshua. For those who meet Yeshua are emboldened and called to share Yeshua for more to meet him. And on the other hand, for those of us who feel more like Rebekah this day, seated in her parents house, not knowing of the calling that awaits her, waiting to be called to rise and depart of her old life. But a new season is coming, and it is your time, dear Rebekah, to enter it without looking back. For the Holy Spirit is your rear guard. And so I come to you this day, right now in this video, as Eliezer and I come to close you with a gift from the father, I say to you, water the 10 camels and ride on the 10 camels to your bridegroom. Ride on the 10 commandments in holiness, walk in uprightness, and let me bring you to the Son, Jesus Christ, Yeshua, the Messiah, to be faced to face with him, as it is written such it was with Rebekah And Isaac, Genesis 24:64. And Rebekah lifted up her eyes and when she saw Isaac face to face, she dismounted from the camel and Isaac took Rebekah and she became his wife. And he loved her. Christ has called his bride unto himself and sent messengers to proclaim it. Don't miss the call, for it has Come to your house. This day, the day of salvation has come to you. And yes, I am genuinely speaking to you. This video is your sign. But your old life is nagging. Your old life is asking you to stay 10 more days. Days. But I want to say to you that when the Holy Spirit is at the door of your house, don't ask him to wait. You cannot hesitate. You cannot stay a day longer, but it is your decision. And so if that is you today and you want to give your life to Christ or rededicate your life to him, pray with me to begin that journey home. Father, I thank you that you have decided to send your Holy Spirit to each of our homes to call us onto a journey to be with you again, face to face. Lord, we do not deserve to be a holy spotless bride according to our works, but according to who you are. Your purity, you dying for your bride. You have made a way for us to be clean. And so, Father, I ask for anyone listening today who is giving their life or who wants to rededicate their life to you because they have wandered. Lord, I ask that you would come into our life and make us new. Father, I ask that you would come and write your law, your ten commandments upon our hearts, that you would come and fill us with your spirit. That you would put a golden ring on our finger and bands on us as you did for Rebecca, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, that we may walk and be known as we walk, as the bride of Christ. Father, I ask that, Lord, you would guide us every day of our life, keep us from the wolves, the evil one. And Father, I thank you that in the story of Rebecca and Isaac, you also give us a role to play in this commission, that you allow us to be as your disciples who are not only saved by you, but get to serve you so others may be saved. Help us, Father, to have that spirit of Eliezer to go and find to gather the bride to call her home. We pray all of this in the name of Yeshua. Amen. Thank you for joining me. If you prayed this prayer of salvation and you want to speak to someone more about Christ and what that means, go to riseonfar.com and contact us. I also want to say a special thank you for joining me and subscribe to the channel and join me next week again, if this was a blessing. As we journey through the Scriptures, God bless you and keep you. Shalom Sa.
